The Federation of International Basketball Associations has pushed back a decision on the hosting of the FIBA Men’s European Championship for Small Countries, due to be held in Limerick in June 2021, until May.
The tournament was postponed from its original date in June 2020 due to Covid.
Basketball Ireland has welcomed the decision which will give time for the greater roll-out of vaccines and hopefully the coming down of infection numbers not only in Ireland but across the continent.
“This is a sensible decision by FIBA to give us all more time to assess where the land lies with Covid-19, both here in Ireland and in Europe,” said Basketball Ireland CEO Bernard O’Byrne.
“There will be a FIBA Board meeting in May when a final call will be made following consultation will all stakeholders and discussions with the various commissions, Medical, Youth and Competitions.”
“Basketball Ireland will be working closely with FIBA to make the appropriate decision on the FIBA Men’s European Championship for Small Countries in Limerick.”
A similar decision on the staging of the UEFA Euro 2020 Finals, including the four games scheduled for Dublin, is expected to be made next month having also been pushed back to allow more time for a clearer picture to emerge on public health.
