TG4 is expanding its coverage of athletics with additional broadcasts scheduled from the World Athletics Continental Tour over the coming months.
The coverage commences this weekend with deferred highlights from the USA Track and Field Grand Prix in Eugene, Oregon on Sunday at 11.40 am and will continue throughout the summer concluding in September.
The first live coverage will be from the 60th Ostrava Golden Spike Athletics event in the Czech Republic on Wednesday, May 19 at 5 pm.
There will be special Irish interest in both events.
Dundrum’s Síofra Cléirigh Büttner is confirmed to take part in the 800m in Oregon this weekend.
The Dubliner previously broke the Irish 800m record at an American Track League meeting in Fayetteville in February of this year and will be looking for vital world ranking points to help her qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in July.
Power
European U23 medallist Nadia Power (pictured above) who came third in the 800m at World Athletics Indoor Tour Final in Madrid in February on TG4, is due to compete in Ostrava as is European 1500m semi-finalist Luke McCann in the blue riband middle distance event.
Commentary on Luthchleasaíocht Beo will be by Cuán Ó Flatharta and by former Irish champion Rory Chesser.
“We’re delighted that Irish athletics fans will benefit from this agreement with TG4 which will deliver free-to-air television broadcasts of several Continental Tour Gold meetings this year,” said World Athletics President Sebastian Coe.
“We’re sure they will like what they see. World Athletics launched the Continental Tour last year for exactly this purpose, to give athletes around the world more opportunities to compete and to give fans more opportunities to watch their local champions competing on an international stage.”
“In this Olympic year, TG4 is delighted to able to bring World Athletics to an Irish audience,” added Rónán Ó Coisdealbha, TG4 Head of Sport.
“We hope that we can showcase Irish athletes competing across the globe.”
