Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry are heading to the Olympics to represent Ireland. The 60 strong field was named yesterday drawn upon the top 60 players in the world.
Countries are allowed no more than two players unless they have more inside the Top 15 in the world, a caveat that plays very strongly into the hands of Team USA who will be represented by Justin Thomas, Bryson DeChambeau, Colin Morikawa and Xander Schauffele.
Team GB will be represented by Paul Casey and Tommy Fleetwood after Tyrell Hatton, Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick all turned down the invitation.
Reigning Olympic Champion Justin Rose misses out.
Sergio Garcia and Dustin Johnson were among others to decline but the tournament will still be strong and includes reigning US Open Champion Jon Rahm representing Spain and reigning US Masters Champion Hideki Matsuyama carrying the hopes of the home nation.
The format of the completion is a familiar 72 hole individual stroke play with the medals being awarded to the players with the lowest scores over the four rounds being played from July 29th to August 1st.
The Women’s field is expected to be announced after this weekend’s KPMG PGA Tournament with Leona Maguire and Stephanie Meadow in contention for Ireland.
