Legion Esports + Media have announced a major €100,000 investment in third-level esports in Ireland. The move marks a significant commitment to develop and scale its recently launched Legion Collegiate esports series.

Since its launch in September 2021, Legion Collegiate has welcomed over 650 students from 33 Irish universities and colleges with over 100 teams competing across a number of well-known gaming titles.

The initial success of Legion Collegiate has reflected the ever-increasing participation in esports both in Ireland and internationally.

The company behind Legion Collegiate, Legion Esports + Media, is Ireland’s leading esports tournament production company and has recently announced a number of commercial partners including An Post Money and Trust Gaming as it continues to attract thousands of international gamers to its flagship Legion Esports Series tournament.

“We’re incredibly excited about today’s announcement,” said CEO Stuart Dempsey. “This investment of €100,000 in our Legion Collegiate series will allow us truly engage with all stakeholders including students, student bodies and the third-level institutions themselves.”

“Furthermore, we have a clear plan to launch a number of live collegiate esports events to shine a light on the incredible esports talent within our third-level system and are at an advanced stage of discussions with a number of sponsorship partners.”

“And most importantly, we plan to ensure that diversity and inclusion continue to be a central pillar to everything we do as we promote the value of esports participation across the entire college system in Ireland. After a hugely successful first semester of Legion Collegiate action, we can’t wait to commence our Semester II series in the New Year.”

Sport for Business Perspective

Building from a strong college base has been a traditional path to success for sport. The everyday growth in esports interest, streaming engagement and participation means this is not something that might become a big hit in Ireland but one which is assured of a long term future.

It is great that Legion esports and Epic, two of the main players in the Irish scene are members already of the Sport for Business community and we will be working closely with them throughout the next year.
