The BAM Cork City Sports International Athletics Meet has been confirmed to be held at the MTU Athletics Track facilities at the Bishopstown main campus in July 2022. The meet was lost to the pandemic in 2020 and 2021.

A meeting was held yesterday between the college, the Cork City Sports Committee and Athletics Ireland where plans were put in place for the meeting that has in recent years seen performances from Phil Healy, Rob Heffernan and Sonia O’Sullivan. O’Sullivan set a junior 3000-metre record at the meet in 1987, one of her milestone steps to an illustrious career.

The last two years of loss to the pandemic echoed the two years from 1988 to 1989, straight after her record, when the meeting did not take place due to financial issues.

MTU’s sports facilities are undergoing a major investment programme with phase one of the MTU Arena, including a new multi-sports hall and gym is under construction and will be completed in time for the event.

Work on phase two, which is an indoor high-performance athletics centre being developed jointly with Athletics Ireland, will commence early in 2023.

As part of the overall €26 million investment supported by the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media the MTU track will be upgraded and will complement the recent upgrading of the Cork City Sports event to International Continental Bronze level.

“We are delighted to be looking forward to hosting this prestigious event at MTU which no doubt will be one of the highlights of the sporting calendar for summer 2022,” said Professor Maggie Cusack.

“This event enables us to continue a longstanding collaborative partnership as a celebration of athletics sporting successes and talent with Cork City Sports, Athletics Ireland and our local City and County Councils on a local, regional, national and international basis.”
