After a two year hiatus, the Rás Mumhan is to return to the roads of Kerry this April, and the Kerry group who were previously on board as sponsors are also back with their name over the event.

The news is a significant boost for cycling to get such a prestigious race back on the schedule.

It will also be welcomed by Tourism interests in Kerry as the visual appeal of the four stages is an exceptional testimonial to attract sporting tourists from across Europe.

It had been thought that the race would switch to Tipperary but that has now been shelved and the Kerry flavour is back to being fully maintained.

It will be the first major Stage Race of the Irish Cycling Calendar and will take place over the 4 days of Easter weekend from Friday, April 15th to Monday, April 18th, 2022.

A new committee has been established to promote and run Kerry Group Rás Mumhan with members of the Killorglin Cycling Club who had been responsible in the past taking a step back with the revival.

The race was last run in 2019.

“This year’s route will allow the riders to race every day, with undulating roads and deliberately staying away from big category 1 climbs,” said new Race Director Daithí Creedon.

“This will open up the race for aggressive racing. Stage 4 will be a spectator-friendly stage and will be a great finale to KGRM 2022.”

Stage one will start and finish in Tralee in a 90-kilometre loop taking in Castlemaine.

The following day will be from Killarney through Killorglin and Ballagisheen to Sneem.

Day Three will take in Knocknagree, Rathmore and Kishkeam while the final day will finish up in Knocknagashel.

Sport for Business Perspective:

“The thought of crowds along the Ring of Kerry to witness the race again is a real winner and one that we cannot wait to see. The visual backdrop is stunning and will be a real boost for the Kerry tourism business.”
