23 year old Murphy’s own journey was perhaps set down when her mother competed in sailing for Ireland at the 1988 Olympics.
She describes how her childhood was spent on and around Dun Laoghaire Harbour dressing up her boat as a pirate ship and throwing Jellyfish at people.
Last summer in London she led the best field of sailors ever assembled in the Olympics but ended up edged out of a medal in fourth place. Along the way she created some notable firsts including the first time RTE Sport had broadcast live coverage of a sailing event.
The hard work in snow, wind and rain is captured perfectly in this video, produced and shot by Atomic Sport and the third of a series that has included Katie Taylor and the Irish Cricket team to date.
Murphy is now preparing for the European and World Laser Sailing Championships which will take place in Dun Laoghaire from 30th August as well as for the next Olympic Games in Rio 2016.
She says that London has improved her mental toughness and that “you don’t want to mess around with me any more.” Take a look at the two videos and we think you’ll agree that this is no easy journey she is on.
