Trinity College Dublin recently unveiled its Sport Scholarship students for 2022 / ‘23. Student-athletes from a wide variety of sports, including rugby, basketball, GAA, rowing, hockey, and cricket are featured in this year’s programme.
Among those on the high-performance pathway are Ryan Baird and Joe McCarthy of Leinster Rugby, Kathryn Dane of Ulster Rugby and Ireland, Rebecca Stokell and Leah Paul of the Irish Women’s Cricket team, and Irish Basketball stars Dayna Finn and Sarah Kenny
“We’re delighted to announce a very strong calibre of scholars for 2022 / ‘23,” said Matthew Dossett, Deputy Director of Sport and Physical Activity at Trinity College Dublin.
“We have eleven sports represented and a diverse range of internationally recognised and developing athletes.”
“The ever-improving standards of the support structure available to our highest performing athletes and teams in Trinity has enabled a continued growth in applications.”
“Improving our capability to attract and support talented athletes is a key objective for Trinity Sport, and this continual process will ensure that Trinity remains a strong destination of choice for the very best student-athletes both domestically and internationally.”
Among the benefits on offer to scholars are specialised strength and conditioning training, a dedicated medical care pathway, lifestyle, nutritional and financial support.
We spoke to Dayna Finn during the week and she highlighted another very important benefit of the scholarship programme.
“As part of the programme I have accommodation on campus, which has been so, so good coming up from the country,” she told us.
“We have a sports block which is five minutes walk from lectures and a five-minute walk from the gym which is fabulous.”
“It’s great to have that one last thing on your mind, especially with the crisis at the moment. There’d be nothing worse than having to find that and then get in and out often late at night.”
An event to celebrate this year’s scholars will be held on Monday, 21st November. During the event, Trinity Sport student-athletes will take part in a panel discussion on ‘Dual career: Combining sports and studies.’
This year’s Sport for Business special event on Sport and Education will take place on Friday, November 18th at the National Basketball Arena in Dublin.
It will be a part of a special weekend of crossover and connection between Irish and US education and sport with the hosting in Dublin of the MAAC-ASUN Dublin Basketball Challenge.
Seven colleges from across the US will travel to Dublin and play in a men’s and Women’s competition bringing high-class College Basketball to our shores.
