The Irish Life Dublin Marathon will see over 20,000 runners take to the streets of Dublin on Sunday 29th of October, including thousands of participants from across the UK, the USA and other international countries.
The race organisers are working in partnership with the four Dublin local authorities, An Garda Síochána and other emergency and transport services to ensure that there is minimum disruption to the residents and businesses along the route for the duration of the event.
It does require road closures though and a full and comprehensive traffic management plan will be put into effect around these road closures.
“The Dublin Marathon attracts participants from all around the world and we want to ensure that everyone is safe,” said Assistant Garda Commissioner Angela Willis, Dublin Metropolitan Region.
“We will have details of road closures on our website www.garda.ie. As always we will work with the event organizers and partner agencies to minimize as much as possible any disruption in the city and wish to thank residents, business operators and visitors for their support on the day.”
“This is one of the biggest events in Dublin every year,” added Race Director Jim Aughney. “It is a great day of celebration for the city. The safety of all the runners is of paramount importance to us. An Garda Síochána is hugely supportive in this area, closing roads and working with us on the overall safety plans.”
Alongside, An Garda Síochána the event is supported by the Dublin Fire Brigade, National Transport Authority and the HSE. The local authorities are also central to delivering the event including Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council, Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council as well as the Office of Public Works.
There are also over 2,000 volunteers who play a crucial in the Irish Life Dublin Marathon.
There is a great tradition of volunteerism since the inaugural event in 1980 and today the running of the event is supported by many cross generational family members, athletics clubs and community groups. The runners who take on the 26.2 miles (42 kilometre) challenge are also greatly supported by up to 300,000 people who line the marathon course to encourage the runners.
“The running of the Irish Life Dublin Marathon would not be possible without a brilliant team, it’s a collective effort that makes it possible and their contribution is greatly appreciated, added Aughney.
The Irish Life Dublin Marathon course will start at Fitzwilliam Street Upper on Sunday 29th of October at 8:40am and will finish in Merrion Square North up to 5pm.
Additional traffic restrictions will be in place near Merrion Square from 7pm on Friday 27th of October, see Irish Life Dublin Marathon website for full details: https://irishlifedublinmarathon.ie/traffic-information/.
