The Allianz Football and Hurling Leagues were launched today, ahead of the opening games taking place this weekend. This is the 32nd year the insurer has been involved with the Association.
Cillian O’Connor, Mayo footballer and winner of last year’s Allianz Division 1 Football Final and Damien Comer, Galway footballer and runner-up in last year’s Allianz Division 1 Football Final, were out and about with media giving an insight into what we have to look forward to over the coming months.
The return of inter-county action, after a five-month break affords the 32 teams competing a chance to showcase their strengths and lay down a marker to their county rivals.
Last year, saw the introduction of a new format to the Allianz Football League whereby the outcome of the competition had a direct impact on qualification for the GAA All Ireland Football Championship, increasing the significance of each match and generating great excitement throughout the competition.
Meath, the winners of the Tailteann Cup dropped into it in the closing stages of the Allianz League Division Two but will have had few regrets in July winning out at Croke Park.
The curtain raiser for the Allianz Football League takes place this Saturday, 28th January with a repeat of last year’s All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Semi Final as Kerry take on Derry, while last year’s Allianz Football League Division 1 finalists, Mayo and Galway will face one another the following day, Sunday, 29th January in Pearse Stadium.
