It is the acting equivalent of an Olympic Gold medal and Ireland was celebrating overnight as Cillian Murphy joined Daniel Day-Lewis as the only Irish actors to win the Best Actor Award at the glitzy Hollywood Awards.
Cork City FC were quick off the mark this morning with not only their congratulations for the Cork-born star but also a cheeky offer of free admission for anyone called Cillian Murphy to attend next Friday’s home game at Turners Cross against Bray Wanderers.
The chances are that the Oscar-winning Cillian will be celebrating throughout the week though he is living in Dublin so you’d never know.
We certainly hope nobody accuses us of doctoring the image above to suggest a regularity at Turners Cross that might not be real…
There are of course potentially hundreds of namesakes that might turn up but anyone chancing their arm and trying it on in the manner of “I’m Billy Murphy” from the Young Offenders a couple of years back will fall foul of the requirement to produce picture ID on the night.
“Like everyone in Cork and Ireland today we are extremely proud of Cillian Murphy and his success,” said Cork City Chief Operating Officer Éanna Buckley.
“As part of Cork’s celebrations, we are giving a free ticket to anyone called Cillian Murphy this Friday night. They just have to tell us their name at the game at Turner’s Cross and show proof of ID.”
The Shelby’s from Peaky Blinders where Murphy took a leading role traditionally supported Birmingham City but there is some evidence on the internet that the actor and his children have more of a grá for Liverpool FC…
