The Irish Men’s U20 Rugby team have qualified for the Semi-Finals at the World Championship in South Africa.
Their final pool game against Australia was abandoned after heavy rainfall made the pitch in Cape Town unplayable.
Both sides were awarded two match points, meaning that Ireland is guaranteed a semi-final spot, though not the first seed that they would have been had they won today’s game. New Zealand, England, and probably Argentina will be the other three to make it, with Ireland likely to meet one of the first two.
The team had been asked to warm up in the stadium’s car park to give the pitch every chance of being passed fit to play, but the decision was made on the grounds of player safety that it should not.
The decision means the elimination of Australia from the last four.
Both semi-finals are scheduled to take place this Sunday, July 14th, at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town, with the final on the evening of Friday, July 19th.
The Irish U20 Teams are sponsored by Sport for Business partner PwC.
