Leona Maguire is to sit out her first Solheim Cup session after being held in reserve by captain Suzann Pettersen.
The tournament is being played only twelve months on from Europe’s fightback from 4-0 down to draw 14-14 in Spain.
The calendar move means that there will now be a Ryder Cup or Solheim Cup at the same time each year into the future, a bonus for fans of the format.
Maguire has built a fearsome reputation as what Pettersen describes as a “Feisty Solheim Cup player” and featured in each of the ten sessions over her two previous appearances.
“To sit Leona in a foursome is a tough call,” said the Captain. “But you go a little bit with the gut. She has a great record and is a feisty Solheim player and you’ll see her.”
Charley Hull and Nelly Korda will face each other in Friday’s opening match
Play gets under way at 07:05 (12:05 Irish time) on Friday with four foursomes (alternate shot) matches.
This is the 19th edition of the Solheim Cup with the US winning 10, Europe seven and last years tie.
It is being played at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club, on the shores of Lake Manassas, near Washington DC in Virginia.
The pairings for Friday’s fourballs, where players play their own ball with the best score counting, will be announced towards the end of the foursomes session.
Saturday will feature four more foursomes matches, followed by four fourballs, with all 24 players contesting 12 singles matches on Sunday.
Georgia Hall who featured at the KPMG Women’s Irish Open is another to be biding her time as are the US stars Lexi Thompson and Megan Khang.
All four debutants this year, two on either side, are out tomorrow. World Number One Nelly Korda is first out for the US with Allison Corpuz against England’s Charley Hull and German first-timer Esther Henseleit.
