Cork legend Patrick Horgan helped launch this year’s AIB GOAL Mile, encouraging communities across Ireland to come together over Christmas to walk, jog or run in support of GOAL’s humanitarian work.

The annual initiative, a staple of the festive season, sees tens of thousands turn out at more than 150 locations nationwide, with funds going towards vulnerable communities around the world.

Speaking at the launch, Horgan said he was looking forward to a “proper, full Christmas at home” — a luxury that can be elusive for elite players who often train through the holiday period. But while he relishes the break, he admitted that one aspect of preparation has always tested him more than any other: running.

“Running was always the hardest part of training for me,” said Horgan, one of the most prolific scorers in hurling history. “Some fellas love it, but I was never one of them. You get it done because you have to, because it’s what the team needs, but it was never the bit I looked forward to.”

That made the GOAL Mile feel all the more meaningful, he added — a reminder that movement, even in its simplest form, can bring people together in a positive way. “This is different. There’s no stopwatch, no pressure, no session hanging over your head. It’s families and friends out for a good cause, and that’s what makes it special.”

AIB, a long-time supporter of both the GOAL Mile and the GAA, said Horgan embodied the spirit of the event: community, resilience, and the shared ambition to help others. The charity is aiming for record participation this year as global humanitarian needs continue to rise.

With Christmas approaching, Horgan said he hopes people will use the Mile as a chance to reset, reconnect and give back. “It’s a simple idea, but it makes a massive impact. And after the year everyone’s had, it’s nice to have something that brings people together.”
