The British and Irish Para Badminton International will bring one of the strongest fields in the sport to Dublin this week, with the action getting underway at the Sport Ireland National Indoor Arena on Wednesday, June 24th and running through to Sunday, June 28th.

For Badminton Ireland, it is a major moment on the international calendar. The tournament is one of only three BWF Para Badminton International Level 1 events staged annually, placing Dublin at the centre of the sport’s world tour and offering Irish players the rare opportunity to compete at home against the very best.

The British and Irish event rotates between Ireland, England, Scotland and Wales, but its arrival in Dublin this year gives the sport here a chance to showcase both elite competition and the growing ambition around para badminton in Ireland.

The likelihood is that almost every player taking to the court in Dublin will be targeting, or will ultimately appear at, the Los Angeles Paralympic Games in 2028.

For the Irish challenge, the home focus will fall most clearly on Dean McCarthy and Neil Joisce, both of whom have been active on the international para badminton circuit in recent weeks and are due to compete on home soil in Dublin as part of this Level 1 world tour event.

Hosting an event of this scale is a statement that Ireland can be part of the highest tier of the para badminton world, not only as a participant but as a host nation capable of delivering a Level 1 international event.

For all of us it is an opportunity to see the best of badminton, in one of its most demanding and inspiring forms, here at home.
