Former Dublin and Cork stars will swap the pitch for the commentary box as the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby reaches the quarter-final stage on Saturday night.
Diarmuid Connolly and Eoin Cadogan will add a new dimension to racing at Shelbourne Park when they go head-to-head in a Celebrity Commentator Challenge.
The former Dublin and Cork All-Ireland winners have swapped the pitch for the commentary box and spent recent weeks learning the art of calling a greyhound race under the guidance of experienced racing commentator Ian Fortune.
Saturday will provide the live test as both take to the microphone in front of the Shelbourne Park crowd on one of the biggest nights of the Derby programme.
The initiative brings together two recognisable figures from Gaelic Games with one of the landmark events on the Irish greyhound racing calendar, adding another strand of entertainment and content around the BOYLE Sports-backed Derby.
It will also extend beyond Saturday night’s audience at the track.
While those attending Shelbourne Park will hear Connolly and Cadogan make their commentary debuts, the winner of the challenge will be kept under wraps until the live broadcast of the BOYLE Sports Irish Greyhound Derby Final on Virgin Media Television 2 on Saturday, September 12th.
The Final programme will feature behind-the-scenes footage from the pair’s time at “Commentator School”, charting their progress under Fortune’s guidance and ultimately revealing which of the two adapted best to life behind the microphone.
The challenge provides an additional piece of personality-led content about the Derby at a time when the sporting action is intensifying.
Saturday night’s Quarter-Finals will determine the remaining contenders for the 2026 title, before the Semi-Finals and ultimately the September 12th Final bring the competition to its conclusion.
The involvement of Connolly and Cadogan also offers an opportunity to take the Derby story to audiences beyond the sport’s traditional following, using two high-profile names and their inter-county rivalry to create content that can travel across broadcast, digital and social channels.
