Sport has played a central role in TG4’s journey from a new Irish-language television station in 1996 to one of Europe’s most distinctive public service broadcasters, and as the channel celebrates its 30th anniversary this weekend, that connection remains central to its vision for the future.
The broadcaster’s relationship with Ladies Gaelic Football is perhaps the most enduring example. Now celebrating 25 years together, TG4 and the LGFA have built one of the most recognisable and influential partnerships in Irish sport, helping to transform the visibility of women’s Gaelic games and establishing a consistent national television platform for the sport.
That relationship received another vote of confidence in January, when TG4 announced an extension of its sponsorship and broadcasting agreement through to 2032, securing the next chapter of a partnership that has accompanied much of Ladies Football’s growth over the past quarter of a century.
The TG4 All-Ireland Championships have become a cornerstone of the summer sporting calendar, with the broadcaster’s long-term involvement providing much more than a television audience. The continuity of the relationship has built recognition for the competition, strengthened its commercial appeal, and given players and supporters confidence that the biggest days in their sport will be seen nationally.
To mark the anniversary, TG4 will launch TG4+ this weekend. It will replace the existing TG4 Player with a significantly enhanced digital platform designed for a viewing landscape increasingly dominated by streaming services and connected televisions.
The new platform will bring together more than 690 box sets, 9,200 programmes and 4,600 hours of content, creating a single destination through which audiences in Ireland and internationally can engage with TG4 programming.
Director General Deirdre Ní Choistín has placed creativity and accessibility at the centre of the broadcaster’s plans for its fourth decade.
“Technology will continue to evolve. Distribution models will change, and audience expectations will grow. But one thing will remain constant: creativity is at the heart of what TG4 does.”
In 2025, TG4 worked with 79 independent production companies across Ireland, generating an estimated €92.8 million in economic output and supporting up to 1,460 jobs nationwide. It has been vital to the sustained growth of Nemeton and Iris Productions, two major drivers of Irish sport’s visibility.
That production ecosystem also extends into sport, where demand for compelling storytelling, original documentary content, and broader coverage of sporting communities continues to grow.
Thirty years ago, TG4 arrived in a television landscape where many Irish sports had limited opportunities to reach national audiences. Its willingness to invest in competitions and stories that might otherwise have struggled for airtime helped broaden what deserved to be seen.
The quarter-century relationship with Ladies Football remains one of the clearest expressions of that approach.
As the broadcaster moves into a new digital era, the challenge will be to maintain that distinctive sporting voice while ensuring that the content is as accessible to younger, streaming-first audiences as it has been to generations of traditional television viewers.
For Irish sport, TG4’s continued strength and evolution matter well beyond the Irish language. It is part of the broadcast infrastructure that allows sporting organisations, competitions and athletes to reach the audiences on which their future growth depends.

Sport for Business Perspective
TG4’s long-standing relationship with Ladies Gaelic Football demonstrates the value of a broadcaster committing to a sport’s development rather than simply buying rights to an established audience.
As the battle for attention moves increasingly towards digital platforms, TG4’s challenge will be to bring that same commitment to discovery, accessibility, and storytelling.
The technology may be changing, but the opportunity to give Irish sport a distinctive and valuable place in the national conversation remains as important as ever.
