The role of ongoing education is as important for those pursuing a career in sport as it is in any other field.
The single focus of preparation at elite level is often a challenging environment to emerge from but Griffith College is signing sporting stars up for an innovative Certificate in Dual Career Development (Sport) that is being encouraged by a number of sports and player representative groups.
The highest profile graduate from the first year of the course was Michael Conlan who will now be putting some of the lessons learned to good effect in his new professional career.
“I had a great experience in Griffith College,” he said.
“The content was really beneficial and the lecturers were top quality.”
“Overall it has given me a real interest in learning again, something that was not a priority in my boxing career before now.”
Registration for this year’s course is now open and proving popular. The course covers topics including the building of your personal brand through social media, handling media interest in your career and life, personal financial planning and negotiation.
The modules are flexible and designed to fit around individuals training schedules and blocked out periods of time for competition.
There is a qualification at the end of the course which gives a platform for entry to further studies should they wish to continue or to return to study at a later point in their career.
“The course has been a real winner because it was built with the sports people in mind,” said Course Director at Griffith College, Eilis O’Leary.
“We also have a number of our top rugby stars undertaking our Business degree course, assisted by our approach to flexible part time study.”
“Those who have had the focus and single minded purpose to excel in sport are likely to excel in other areas of life as well and we are pleased to be giving them the help that is needed to prepare for their life after the final whistle or the last bell has sounded.”
Sport for Business has a strong membership within the education sector and will shortly be announcing the formation of a new group to look at ways in which greater connections can be fostered between the worlds of sport, business and education.
