The company has been title sponsor of the Airtricity League since 2010. In the three seasons since there has been the breakthrough of Sligo Rovers to win this year’s title, Airtricity League selections playing some of Europe’s biggest clubs, increased TV coverage and an unprecedented advance for teams into the group stages of European competition.
It has not all been plain sailing with the demise of Monaghan United this season but the additional stability of this commitment will increase confidence as plans are drawn up for the 2013 campaign.
Last year the company added title sponsorship of the new Airtricity U19 league, underlining its support for our next generation of elite players.
Airtricity is further enhancing its commitment to Irish football by becoming the official energy partner to the FAI and its international teams.
“We are very proud to support the domestic game in this country,” said Airtricity Managing Director Stephen Wheeler. “We are producing more and more top stars of the future like Shane Long, Kevin Doyle, James McClean and Seamus Coleman, creating ever stronger ties with our international teams.
“Those links and the success of the partnership make it a natural step for us to become Official Energy Partner of the FAI and its international teams.”
“We are very happy to be sharing in the success of Airtricity whose growth in the Irish market is being matched by a strengthened commitment to Irish domestic and international football,” added FAI CEO John Delaney. “Their decision is a big endorsement of our sport and the passion and interest it generates in every household in the country. We look forward to helping them continue their record growth in the Irish market.”
Average attendances at matches were up last season and this is clearly an area where much focus needs to be centred.
As with any sponsor, engagement with fans at club and international level will be a key element of Airtricity’s activation of the deal and we will look at their plans for this in advance of the new season.
