Athlone Town Women went top of the SSE Airtricity Women’s Premier Division at the weekend, and are back in European action today as they continue their UEFA Women’s Champions League journey in Enschede, Netherlands.
Strong Start in Europe
The Midlands side advanced through the first qualifying round in impressive fashion, defeating Cardiff City 4–0 before seeing off Croatian side ZNK Agram 3–0. That second win featured two spectacular Olimpico goals direct from corners by Madison Gibson, either side of a composed strike from Hannah Waesch. Solid defensive performances across both games ensured Athlone progressed with consecutive clean sheets.
It enabled Athlone to become the first Irish women’s club in over a decade to make it through the opening stage of the Champions League.
Breiðablik Test This Afternoon
Attention now turns to today’s semi-final clash against Icelandic champions Breiðablik, one of the most experienced clubs in the competition, and 19-time Champions of their country.
The match takes place in Enschede, with kick-off at 12 noon Irish time. It will be shown live and free upon registration on LOITV.
The winners will advance to Saturday’s mini-tournament final against hosts Twente Eschede or Crvena Zvezda for a place in the final qualifying round
