The League of Ireland can only sigh as the English Premier League has announced a three year extension of its partnership with Barclays.
The sponsorship of the Barclays Premier League will now run through to the end of the 2015/16 season.  The value of the deal is estimated to be around £120 million (€150 million).
While Sean McCaffrey has quit Dundalk amid growing financial concerns and Bohemians exit the Europa League at the hands of a team from Iceland, soccer at the highest level in England has never had it so good.
Barclays has been going through a major PR crisis over allegations on wrong doing in the markets that has already claimed the careers of a number of senior managers.
It continues to invest heavily in sport as a way of connecting with its current and future customers and while the banks presence in Ireland is limited to the commercial sector it was still present as a first time sponsor in Irish sport at the Curragh Races over the weekend of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby.
The bank is heavily involved in soccer, tennis, golf and rugby union.  It also supports Barclays Spaces for Sport, a community and employment skills initiative which will be discussed among Sport for Business Community Members at the next Round Table on the subject of Sport and Employment taking place in Dublin on July 26th.
