Fionnuala Britton has won the gold medal in the Ladies Senior event at the Spar European Cross Country Championships in Slovenia.
The Wicklow native who runs for Rathcoole Athletics Club finished fourth in the event last year but swept to glory today having set out to make all in the race.
Portugal’s Anna Dulce Felix, who pipped Britton for Bronze twelve months ago took silver today with Britain’s Gemma Steel in bronze.
The last Irish gold medal in these Championships was 17 years ago when Catherina McKiernan won the inaugural running.
It was a strong day overall for the Irish team with Joe Sweeney from Dundrum Athletics Club running an impressive fifth in the men’s event.
