Sport for Business featured with a guest column in yesterday’s Sunday independent newspaper highlighting why and how Airtricity League clubs should be looking to capture some of the interest shown by millions of fans in soccer over the summer.
We were pleased to hear from Waterford United last week that they had indeed reached out to the local Polish community last week ahead of the Munster derby game against Limerick on Friday.
Torrential rain had threatened the game through the day but it was played and while the numbers in attendance were still small, the crowd of 585 was still up be nearly 50% on the same fixture from last season.  Victory for Waterford will also have helped to convince some of those who made the journey to return again.
There has been a positive reaction to the story from yesterday and while facilities are held up by some as a reason why the clubs cannot attract the crowds they need, the same is true of many sporting grounds throughout the country and fans need to be interested enough to attend for the sport rather than the comfort of the seats if they are to become longer term converts.
