Calls for greater Cardiac Screening

Sudden Cardiac Death has struck in Irish sport with Tyrone GAA Captain Cormac McAnallen and Irish U19 Rugby World Cup star John McCall two of those who died.
The GAA in particular has been active in seeking to combat the threat. The Association recommends that all players over the age of 14 complete a cardiac screening questionnaire which seeks to establish through family history and general health who might best be screened through a physical exam and ECG.
Well over 1,000 Automated External Defibrillators have been purchased by clubs through a subsidised scheme and training in their use is provided regularly.
The IRFU also put a scheme in place in 2008 which provided for greater access for debrillators in clubs.
The AED’s which have saved many lives in sport were invented by Frank Pantridge, a cardiologist from Hollywood, County Down.
