Each weekend, we highlight some of the performances that light up the Irish sporting landscape.

This weekend, we highlight action in Golf, Swimming, Rugby, Basketball, Camogie and Ladies Football.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to you by PwC, one of Sport for Business’s key partners, and supporters of our annual 30 under 30 Feature.

Rory McIlroy

Last year he became one of only six golfers in history to win the Career Grand Slam, this year he became one of only four to win back-to-back US Masters.  Could next year see the first ever to win three in a row?

Shane Lowry

Shane Lowry became the first golfer in history to score multiple hole in ones at the iconic tournament, giving some consolation for a disappointing final day for the Offaly man.

Irish Swimming

Swim Ireland’s Irish Open Swimming Championships ended in Bangor on Sunday evening, with Ellen Walshe the standout of the week, claiming her fifth national title. Jack Cassin also starred, setting a new Irish Senior Record on his way to a third title, while Daniel Wiffen matched that haul with three gold medals of his own. Danielle Hill and Clare Custer rounded out the Championships with two titles apiece.

Irish Women’s Rugby

They may not have won but Ireland halved the margin of victory that England won by in last year’s Guinness Six Nations, and they are the reigning World Champions and this was at the Allianz Stadium, Twickenham in front of a tournament record 77,120 spectators.

Trinity Meteors

Trinity Meteors won their first Domino’s Women’s Super League since 1992/93, defeating UCC Glanmire 87-81 in a thrilling playoff final at the National Basketball Arena on Sunday. Ava Learn was the MVP, with 23 points and 12 rebounds for the victors.

Ballincollig

Ballincollig defeated Killester 79-71 to lift the Domino’s Men’s Super League and compete the double in the process, having won the Domino’s MSL National Cup in January. It is the Cork clubs second Super League title in four years, while for Killester it is Domino’s Men’s Super League final heartache for the third year in row.

Galway Camogie

Galway ended a run of two consecutive final defeats to add the Centra Camogie League Division 1A title to the All-Ireland championship they already possess from last August.

Cork Ladies Football

A dramatic finish saw Cork win the Lidl NFL Division 1 title at the TUS Gaelic Grounds Limerick.  Two goals in the last two minutes saw the cup head to Leeside for the first time since 2019.

Leinster and Ulster Rugby

The two provinces sealed home wins to secure Semi Final places in the European Champions and Challenge Cups.  Better still both of them will be at home with Leinster hosting Toulon in Dublin and Ulster hosting Exeter in Belfast, both on the May Bank Holiday Weekend.
