Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that deserve recognition. This weekend, we highlight action in Rugby, Swimming, Show Jumping, at the Aviva Stadium and in Golf.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by KPMG, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our coverage of Golf and Innovation.
Eve Higgins and the Irish Women’s Rugby Team
This was exactly the performance that was required for Ireland to rack up a 49-14 win over Japan. Brittany Hogan got the player of the Match award, but Eve Higgins’ line break and shimmy for the Beibhinn Parsons try, and then her interception and length of the pitch return for another were the moments that stood out on a special day for the team.
John Shortt
Two gold medals and a bronze at the World Junior Championships is something no Irish swimmer has ever achieved. John Shortt from Galway did it in the 100 and 200 metre, as well as the 50 metre backstroke events in Otopeni.
The Aer Lingus College Football Classic Team
24,000 visitors from the United States swarmed the city over the past few days and created a massive buzz about the place. They brought that then to the Aviva Stadium and showed once more what in-game entertainment and atmosphere can be. This was the fourth of an initial five-year run, with next year’s game already in the book, and 2027 also booked as what will hopefully be the start of a forever deal to light up the Irish Sporting Calendar at the end of August.
Irish U21 Show Jumping Team
Ireland’s Under 21 riders have won a team FEI Eventing European Championships silver medal after finishing runners-up over a dramatic four days of high-class competition in Strzegom, Poland.
The squad of Ben Connors, Godfrey Gibbons, Momo Sheehy, Oleana Cowen and Amelia McCarthy were pipped right at the death by a victorious French team after the final show jumping phase on Sunday afternoon.
Evan Ferguson
The Republic of Ireland talismanic striker made his debut appearacnce for Roma and was a big hit with the fans and the media after a five star performance and an opening day win for the team.
Tommy Fleetwood (and his Irish Fans)
This is a stretch as an Irish celebration but tell that to the tens of thousands who have followed Tommy Fleetwood, probably the nicest guy in golf and from North of England roots that run deep. He has been impossible to watch as he failed at the crucial points so far in his career. Last night’s Tour Championship was his 48yh Top Ten Finish on the PGA Tour and his first win. Great timing as well as it came with a $10 Million first prize.
