Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that deserve recognition. This weekend, we highlight action in Boxing, Tennis, Horse Racing, Track and Field at the World Athletics Championships, as well as Men’s and Women’s football on both the domestic and international stages.

This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by Lidl Ireland, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our coverage of Women’s Sport.

Aoife O’Rourke

Team Ireland’s Aoife O’Rourke won World Boxing Championship gold, following a highly physical 75 Kg final against Turkey’s Busra Isildar in Liverpool on Sunday.

“It’s incredible, it hasn’t even sunk in yet. The whole buzz and the atmosphere here is just… I’m overwhelmed with excitement and enjoyment. It’s a fantastic feeling. Long may it last!”

Aoife and her sister, Lisa, a 2022 World champion, are now among a select group of sibling World champions.

Tennis Ireland

A sold-out National Indoor Arena and a competitive match in the Davis Cup against China were rewarded when Michael Agwi scored a singles victory on Sunday over Faijing Sun.

Delacroix

The Royal Bahrain Irish Champion Stakes was the centrepiece of the Champions Weekend Festival at Leopardstown and the Curragh and was won for the home country by Delacroix, with a french name and a Belgian jockey but bred and trained in Tipperary.

Nicola Tuthill

There was a breakthrough performance in the Women’s Hammer Throw at the World Athletics Championships for Nicola Tuthill, who qualified for her first global final. The 21-year-old Cork native threw a best of 70.70 metres to finish sixth in Qualification Group A, leaving her with a nervous two-hour wait before her place in the top twelve was confirmed.  Her final is today.

Kerry FC

On Friday night, Kerry FC came from 3-0 down to win 4-3 against Sligo Rovers and progress to the semi-final of the Sports Direct FAI Cup.  No team has ever done this from such a scoreline to progress on the night.

Fionnuala McCormack

40 years old and with three children watching on from home, Ireland’s Fionnuala McCormack posted her first Top 10 Marathon finish at a major Championships on Sunday morning, finishing 9th at the World Athletics Championships.

Republic of Ireland Women’s U17 Footballers

The Republic of Ireland Women’s Under-17s defeated the host nation, Italy, 1-0, to win an international tournament at the Stadio Gino Colaussi.

Following a 4-0 victory over Slovenia and a 6-0 triumph over North Macedonia, James Scott’s team entered this Final full of confidence, despite a new group of players stepping up to this level for the first time.

With UEFA European Championship Qualifiers coming up next month against Belgium, France and Germany, Scott was keen to make the most of this tournament. His squad certainly did that, scoring 11 goals and conceding none.
