Each weekend, we select performances from Irish sports that deserve recognition. This weekend, we highlight action in Athletics, Eventing, Rowing, Swimming, Golf and Gaelic Games.
This week’s Champions of the Weekend is brought to us by SSE Airtricity, one of Sport for Business’s key partners and supporters of our coverage of Sustainability in Sport.
Kate O’Connor
Kate O’Connor has won silver in the heptathlon at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, setting a new Irish record of 6,714 points.
The Dundalk St Gerard’s athlete becomes the first Irish individual to medal in a multi-discipline event at the Worlds, and only the sixth Irish athlete ever to reach the podium.
O’Connor delivered five personal bests across seven events, including a gutsy 2:09.56 in the decisive 800m.
She joins Irish legends Eamonn Coghlan, Sonia O’Sullivan, Gillian O’Sullivan, Olive Loughnane, and Rob Heffernan as a World Championships medallist.
Cian McPhillips
A heartbreaking fourth in the 800 metres at the World Athletics Championships for the Longford man but also a pointer to what might lie ahead for this talented athlete, now very much on the global stage.
Irish Eventing Team
Ireland’s eventing team are back among the medals after a sensational silver at the FEI Eventing European Championship in Blenheim Palace, UK.
The result means a first team European medal win at senior level since 1995.
Irish Rowers
24 Team Ireland Rowers are in action at the World Championships in China.
Nathan Timoney and Ross Corrigan, Philip Doyle and Fintan McCarthy, and Fiona Murtagh and Konan Pazzia all advanced to the next round of their respective competitions.
Róisín Ní Ríaian
The 2025 Para Swimming World Championships got underway yesterday, with Roisín Ní Ríaian already securing a bronze medal.
Lauren Walsh
Ireland’s Lauren Walsh finished in fifth spot at the Ladies European Tour 2025 La Sella Open, carding a closing 72 to finish on 10 under. The other Irish competitor in the field, Annabel Wilson, shared 19th place on four under after also signing for a 72.
