Shannon McCurley. Picture Conor McCabe PhotographyOlympic track cycling hopeful Shannon McCurley had one last engagement before jumping on a plane to Rio and that was to train a team of Deliveroo riders on what it takes to get her fit and ready on her bike.

Deliveroo is an on-demand food delivery service that brings local restaurant food to homes and offices using cyclists to deliver rather than cars or motorbikes.

Its riders are a familiar site on the streets of Dublin and on no fewer now the 20,000 bikes around the world.

McCurley, who will represent Ireland in track cycling at the Olympics spent over an hour sharing tips with the riders on nutrition, fitness, road safety and bike maintenance.

“Todays’ session, was a nice distraction for me as I prepare for the intense build up to the Olympics next week. Rio is going to test me physically, mentally and emotionally, but I’m really looking forward to Ireland getting behind me and showing their support.”

“We provide all our riders with safety training and top quality equipment to ensure they are safe and confident on the roads as possible,” said Oliver Dewhurst, Country Manager for Deliver Ireland.

“We also believe having experienced riders like Shannon share their knowledge with our riders not only helps build their confidence but also their enthusiasm for the job – which is a priceless investment from our perspective.”

The 24 year old Australian born cyclist is the first Irish female to qualify for an Olympic track cycling event. Shows doing this not as part of Team Ireland or as a separate sponsorship deal but as a training day where there happened to be a photographer and a press release.

It’s a skating around the prohibitions on commercial activity during the Olympic Games period but with there not being another fast food delivery service among the Top Olympic Sponsors, we think it will be OK.

And if it helps to get the pizza or pad thai that will fuel late night Olympic watching sessions there safer then that can only be a good thing…
