
The technology, called Visi, has been designed to present energy in a visually appealing way, helping people to understand what drives changes in demand by allowing them to see how external factors, such as weather, can influence energy consumption.
It also allows energy managers to monitor and improve a venues’ energy use, reducing their carbon footprint and helping to deliver a more sustainable Games.
“Visi brings new energy saving opportunities to businesses by providing detailed insight about energy use and a new visually appealing way to display energy information so that it’s meaningful for all those involved at a venue,” said an EDF spokesman.
“It allows staff to see, almost instantly, how their actions affect energy use in way that makes sense to them.”
Both Croke Park and the Aviva Stadium have placed a very high priority on energy use and sustainability. The former became the first stadium in the world to receive the ISO20121 accreditation designed around the Olympic stadia. It has reduced energy consumption by 30%since 2008 and saves 370,000 litres of water a day through efficient use. It has also engaged fans in the effort through the Cúl Green initiative.
With energy companies heavily involved in major sporting sponsorships, including Electric Ireland, Bord Gáis, Airtricity and Bord na Mona, this is an area that can shows innovation in a meaningful way to consumers using the medium of sport.
