RONALDO’S COCA COLA MOVES

We know two things from Christiano Ronaldo’s highly publicised switch of bottles of Coca Cola out of camera shot on Tuesday night. One is that Coca Cola is a sponsor of the tournament and two the Portuguese word for water as Agua.

Other than that, the impact of his deft hands and clearly strong held conviction on healthy living may last little longer than the 15 seconds it took to do.

Millions of video shares have been seen on social media and the story of how it coincided with a dip of 1.6 per cent in Coca Cola’s share price, worth an incredible $4 billion, has been played out across media around the world.

Jill Downey from Core Sponsorship was on The Hard Shoulder on Newstalk yesterday to discuss it and Rob hartnett from Sport for Business joined Cormac O’Headhra and Sarah McInerney on RTÉ Drivetime to “give an insight into the mind of brand management”

POGBA’S ZERO RECOGNITION OF HEINEKEN

Paul Pogba was in bottle shifting form on the same day lifting the Heineken 0.0 bottle out of camera shot.

Pogba is a Muslim and obviously does not have much time for Alcohol brands, even if it was a non-alcoholic bottle that was on display.

It will be interesting to see what will happen if he is awarded the ‘Star Player’ award in any of France’s remaining games as that is the main sponsorship asset of the brand at the games.

VOLKSWAGEN MAKE UP PROTEST HAT TRICK

A Greenpeace protester railing against the use of fossil fuels landed a microlite plane on the pitch just before the France Germany game on Tuesday night, completing a hat trick of protests against sponsor brands at the tournament.

Once more this was slightly off the beat as VW has been exclusively promoting its Electric Vehicle range at the games and in their partnership activation.

Probably just goes to show that protest needs as much planning in advance to be effective, even if events can sometimes overtake it.
