It’s always nice to plan ahead so if you are getting ready to watch Ireland playing in the 2022 World Cup, a mere seven years away now, you had best set your diaries to block out November and December rather than the traditional June and July.
The tournament is to be held in Qatar which would have searing and potentially dangerous temperatures in the summer and the man charged with setting the date for the tournament, Sheikh Salman Bin Ebrahim al Khalifa, in his role as President of the Asian Football Confederation, said yesterday that “it is settled, it will be a Winter tournament and will not clash with the 2023 Winter Olympics.”
Later he added that “The period best suited for hosting the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be in November and December because for sure it needs to be played in the winter.”
Doha is 3 hours ahead of us so matches are most likely to be staged on a cycle of 5pm and 7pm kick offs in Dublin time. Not too many late nights then.
And while we are looking to the future Cyrus Christie will be 30 years old by then, a great age to be captain leading your team out…
