The FIFA Women’s World Cup got off to a flying start over the weekend with the quality of action on the field living up to the highest hopes of those who believe it will be a tipping point for Women’s sport.
RTÉ Sport and TG4 shared the first seven games to take place, producing 21 goals and wins for Brazil, England, France, Germany, Norway, Spain and Italy.
Big crowds in the grounds and strong traditional media coverage of the tournament across most of the major markets have also given the tournament a strong boost.
This was perhaps the goal of the weekend from Germany’s teenage sensation Giulia Gwinn securing a 1-0 win over China.
