With a population of 1.24 million, Munster comes in just short of the number living in Dublin but it has garnered a greater overall sum of capital grants at a shade over €7,000,000. This breaks down to a per capita sum of 5.62, almost bang on the national average and 8% higher than the figure given to projects in Dublin. That is not unexpected given the economies of scale that urban projects can deliver as opposed to rural ones.
The biggest winner in Munster was the GAA with just over €3 million in funding to 60 projects. This is double the number achieved by Dublin clubs. Soccer saw a similar doubling of the projects and rugby was the third to breach €500,000 for its nine selected winners.
Rowing was also a big winner in Munster, doubtless drawn together by the local presence of the National Rowing Centre and it’s nine projects will benefit from funding of just over €260,000.
Also among the smaller sports Gymnastics once again featured in the top ten with three individual projects attracting €50,000, €17,000 and €7,000 respectively.
Munster Capital Grants broken down by sport (Top 10)
- GAA (60 projects) € 3,113,103
- Soccer (33 projects) € 1,322,000
- Rugby (9 projects) € 523,000
- Rowing (9 projects) € 261,561
- Tennis (6 projects) € 247,000
- Boxing (9 projects) € 113,500
- Gymnastics (3 projects) € 74,000
- Sailing (4 projects) € 63,000
- Pitch & Putt (3 projects) € 57,000
- Golf (1 project) € 45,000
Three GAA, one soccer, and one rugby projects won grants in excess of €100,000. This represented a smaller number of larger projects and a wider spread than was the case in Dublin.
Next week we will complete our nationwide tour by looking at Connaught / Ulster and the rest of Leinster.
