This is the second year of the initiative which aims to tap into the start of the All Ireland Championship season and assist local sponsors, media and players in drawing attention and raising excitement.
All 32 counties now have official twitter accounts and the #GAA hashtag has been dominated by messages pushing events from the Meath meeting of fans and players at Tayto Park to Galway, Cork and Dublin at Pearse Park, Sarsfields and Ballyboden GAA Clubs respectively. All bar Meath, Galway, Kilkenny, Clare and Antrim are also active on Facebook.
“The evening is managed by each of the counties in a format which they feel most comfortable with,” said GAA Communications Manager Alan Milton.
“It is an opportunity for sponsors and players to be active with the fans, and for local media, many of whom are broadcasting live from events to bring a sense of the months ahead into every home in the county.”
The GAA has centrally supported the initiative through the distribution of material and national promotions.
Local promotion is the most effective in reaching out to pockets of fans with very specific messages about their team, and the coordinated approach is an excellent way to get the summer ball rolling in local clubs and communities.
The initiative through Tickets.ie where national sponsors Supervalu and Centra sell match tickets through local outlets has been extended to more locations this year and is a key way of driving advance sales for matches the attendance at which might otherwise be overly reliant on our capricious weather.
