Of greater importance was the €80,000 raised for the ongoing medical care of Sean Cox, the Liverpool fan injured in a vicious attach while attending a Champions League game against Roma at Anfield in the Spring.
He is making some progress during rehabilitation at the National Rehab Hospital in Dun Laoghaire but the cost of his long term care will be significant and the family expressed huge gratitude yesterday for the efforts of the GAA.
It was a special game for Cox who grew up as a member of Jim Gavin’s Round Towers Club in Clondalkin before moving out to Meath and serving as Chairman of the St Peter’s Club in Dunboyne.
Santa Claud dropped by and took part in a Penalty Shoot Out with Niall Quinn and it was also a big day for Nicky Hamill, Director of Sport at the Irish Wheelchair Association whose son was on the bench for Meath.
It’s keeping Cox’s plight in the public eye that is as important as the individual money raised at the event and both teams deserve credit for fielding strong teams and putting on a good show for the 4,000 crowd that was there.
It’s a long road ahead for Cox and his family. This will help them on the journey.
If you are able to make a small donation towards the €2 million fundraising target, every little would be appreciated at this GoFundMe page.
