2012 was the first year in which girls camps were run as a separate entity and this is the fifth year of Centra’s involvement with the camps in an overall context.
The brand does have an association with Women’s Sport having been a previous headline sponsor of the All Ireland Camogie Championships.
“Centra and its independent retail partners across Northern Ireland have proudly supported the Ulster Rugby Summer Camps for five years, because they provide a great opportunity for young people to learn new skills, enjoy some exercise and have fun during the summer holidays,” said Jenni Barkley of Centra.
“The girls camps allow even more young people to experience the summer camps and enjoy grassroots rugby.”
“The recent success of the Ireland Women’s squad winning the Six Nations Grand Slam has thrust Women’s rugby into the spotlight and this has resulted in more and more young girls looking to give it a go,” added Zoe Templeton, Female Rugby Officer at Ulster Rugby.
No prior experience of the game is necessary. The aim of the camps will be to introduce and develop key rugby skills in a fun and safe environment, under the watchful eyes of qualified and experienced coaches.
Participants will not only receive a full coaching programme delivered by Ulster Rugby coaches, but will also take away an Ulster Rugby T-shirt, rugby ball and boot bag as well as a ticket voucher for an Ulster match at Ravenhill, serving to lock in support of the sport at all levels and perhaps unearth stars that could even represent Ireland at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
The Ireland Women’s 7’s team made it to the quarter finals of the Women’s World Cup in Russia last week having beaten South Africa and China to secure a place as one of the eight best teams in the world. Three Ulster players were on the squad and these camps may encourage more as the sport continues to rise.
The IRFU is entering a girls team in the Rugby 7’s tournament of the UK Schools Games this September with screening dates for squad selection taking place this weekend.
