Each morning over the coming weeks and months we will bring you a daily summary of how sport is handling a return to activity in the wake of Covid-19.
OLYMPICS
The Executive Committee of the International Olympic Committee will meet virtually today with the planning for 2021 and the financial implications of the postponement likely to head the agenda.
The Swiss Government and the IOC are to share the underwriting of repayable loans to smaller international sporting federations that are based in the country. Read More Here.
MODERN PENTATHLON
The qualification process for Natalya Coyle and Arthur Lanigan O’Keeffe to confirm participation at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games have become clearer with the international governing body for the sport of Modern Pentathlon confirming a 12-week window of qualification spread over four events.
The first will be in Budapest starting on March 24th, followed by Sofia on April 7th and then again on April 15th. The World Cup Final will take place in Seoul has now been rescheduled for May 13th to 16th.
CALIFORNIA
California State Governor Gavin Newsom has told Sport Business that “It is difficult to imagine a stadium that’s filled until we have immunity, until we have a vaccine.”
The State hosts 18 professional sports franchises including the LA Lakers and the San Francisco 49’ers.
While the worldwide search for a vaccine is being funded and chased down faster than could ever have been imagined, medical opinion is that it will still be a long time before it can be developed and made available on a worldwide basis.
GOLF
Players travelling to the US for the proposed reopening of the season behind closed doors on June 11th will have to abide by strict 14-day quarantine rules in the US and most likely if they are returning home.
In order then to play in the first four tournaments that are scheduled players travelling from Europe or around the world will need to base themselves permanently in the US. It is too early to say if restrictions will be at the same level by the time of the Ryder Cup in September but that will now have to be a factor.
FOOTBALL
Italian Serie A games have been cleared to resume on June 13th following a conference call among the teams and the league’s general assembly yesterday. Collective training will resume from this Monday.
All of the dates will be subject to Government decisions on public health matters.
