Ireland’s rising equestrian stars delivered a performance for the ages on Thursday afternoon, claiming team gold at the FEI Show Jumping European Championships in Riesenbeck, Germany.
The victory caps an exceptional week for Irish showjumping, highlighting the strength and depth of talent emerging from the junior ranks.
Under the guidance of Chef d’Equipe Denis Flannelly, the Irish team of Alice Wachman, Tabitha Kyle, Paddy Reape, Jack Kent, and Emily Moloney produced a composed and dominant display to finish on a final score of 6.99, well ahead of silver medallists The Netherlands (12.79) and bronze medallists Belgium (20.60).
With 22 nations in contention, Ireland began the competition in solid fashion on Tuesday, finishing the first round in fifth. A commanding display on Wednesday propelled them into a clear lead, and Thursday’s final round was all about composure and execution — qualities that this team delivered in spades.
Speaking after the victory, Flannelly praised not only his riders but the broader network that supports them:
“I’m absolutely thrilled. Every one of them has jumped their hearts out all week. This gold medal reflects the hard work of these athletes, their coaches, support teams, and families. It’s also a result of the efforts of all our Nations Cup athletes this season — each one has contributed to raising our standards.”
Flannelly acknowledged the importance of preparation and support, singling out Liz Brennan, selector Denis Lynch, and selection panel chair Sally Anne Tobin, as well as Horse Sport Ireland and veterinary support from Seamus McSorley of EquiVet.
He also extended thanks to Cian and Ruth O’Connor at Karlswood, whose facilities were made available in the run-up to the championships.
