The World GAA Handball Championships scheduled to be held in Ireland for the first time since 2012 have been postponed.

The Championships are held every three years and cycle between Ireland, the United States and Canada. They were to have been staged at the new GAA Handball Centre at Croke Park but have fallen victim to Covid-19.

“The World Handball Council have informed us that they have made the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 World Handball Championships due to be held in Ireland later this year,” said GAA Handball National Manager John Kelly.

“The decision was taken due to the ongoing situation with the Coronavirus pandemic, taking into account the safety of members, the financial impact of the virus and the impact on world travel.”

No decision has been made yet on a new date but it has to be hoped that the plan to stage the Championships at Croke Park will be seen as too good an opportunity and too high profile a setting to pass up.

The last time the Championships came to Ireland 1,800 competitors took part in a specially constructed 23 court facility at the CityWest Convention Centre.
