The Centre opened in March 2003 and over 800,000 visitors a year use the facility. It hosted the swimming events for the 2003 Special Olympic Games and played host to a number of teams at training camps for last years London Olympics. These included teams from Britain, the United States and as far afield as South Korea.
The Centre also plays a major role within the community with over 5,000 members, and has the largest swimming lessons programme in the country with more than 2,000 doing lessons each week.
In what will be a busy day at the centre, Swim Ireland will also launch a four year strategic plan for its high performance team, which we will look at for opportunities in the business arena over the course of next week.
The Championships themselves are serving as qualifiers for a host of international events including the World Championships taking place in Barcelona in July, the World University Games and the European Junior Championships.
Swim Ireland are maintaining a good media and online service updating with qualifying times and results and simplifying what would otherwise be a complex looking programme.
The racing will continue this evening and is being broadcast live for the first time in a special programme on Setanta Sports.
That coverage will be a boost in profile for the clubs that the swimmers represent including the Aer Lingus swimming club which has Andrew Meegan and Barry Murphy among its members.
