Ireland has a new World Champion, after 17-year-old Sean Butterly struck gold in the Junior Men’s Long Course at the ICF Canoe Marathon World Championships.
The Salmon Leap Canoe Club athlete delivered a stunning finish, powering clear in the final 200 meters to edge out South Africa’s Keegan Vogt by just two seconds.
The title caps a remarkable season for the rising star, who already secured silver and bronze medals at the European Championships earlier this summer.
His triumph was made all the more dramatic by his comeback from heartbreak just two days earlier, when an untimely capsize in the short course event ended his medal hopes in that event.
Butterly’s gold marks one of Ireland’s most significant international results in canoe marathon racing in recent years and highlights the country’s growing presence on the global paddling stage.
