Ireland has won the right to host another major sporting event. Dun Laoghaire Golf Club will be the venue for the 2016 Curtis Cup Match between Great Britain and Ireland and the United States.
The decision was made after Stephanie Meadow of Royal Portrush and Leona Maguire of Slieve Russell played their part in helping the home team to victory at the Nairn Country Club in Scotland at the weekend.
This was the first victory for GB and Ireland since 1996 when the most prestigious event in Ladies Amateur Golf was last held in Ireland at the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club. It also completed a clean sweep of Golf’s major international team contests after the Ryder, Solheim and Walker Cups had all been secured on this side of the Atlantic.
“We are delighted that the next home Curtis Cup match will be held in Ireland in 2016,” commented Shona Malcolm, CEO of the Ladies Golf Union. “Dun Laoghaire Golf Club submitted a very compelling bid for hosting the 2016 match.
“The quality of the course and top class facilities at Dun Laoghaire, coupled with the commitment and enthusiasm of the club’s team, convinced us that we were selecting a great venue.”
Club President Derek Montgomery said: “This is a tremendous achievement for our club. It will be a fitting showcase event for our course, and for ladies golf in Great Britain & Ireland.
“We are determined to host a very successful event, and are confident that, with the support of our members, we can make it a truly memorable occasion.”
The 27-hole championship course moved to Ballyman Glen in the summer of 2007 from its original 18-hole home between Monkstown and Glenageary near Dun Laoghaire.
Private Home Care and Miele are the main sponsors of the Irish Ladies Golf Union.
