Irish Women's soccerIt has been great to see a very positive level of coverage of the Irish Women’s soccer team as they prepare for this evening’s friendly international against Austria at Tallaght Stadium.
The team topped their group at a recent Cyprus tournament with wins over Northern Ireland and South Africa and are now preparing for the World Cup qualifying tournament which gets underway in September and will see Germany, Russia, Croatia and Slovenia coming to Ireland.
Germany and Russia wil both play in the Euro 2013 finals in Sweden next month, being covered live on BBC television for the first time.
Yvonne Tracy will tonight become only the fourth irish player, and the third of them from Arsenal, to reach 75 international caps. The squad is a mix of players from clubs competiting in the Bus Eireann sponsored Women’s National League and further afield from Germany, Scotlan, England and the United States.
There has been better than normal coverage in the mainstream media and both of the major photo agencies were on site at Tallaght yesterday which will mean more this morning. The picture above is of SC Freiburg striker Fiona O’Sullivan, born in California but with strong Irish roots.
Admission to the ground tonight is €10 with U16’s going free. Kick off is at 7.30pm.
The Irish national team manager Sue Ronan will be one of the speakers at Thursday’s Business of Women’s Sport conference organised by Sport for Business and taking place at the UCD Smurfit Business School.
