Good news for Irish football fans over the weekend when it was confirmed that RTÉ will be showing tomorrow’s Women’s European Championship Qualifier away to Greece.
On Saturday The Greek FA advised RTÉ that they had secured an outside broadcast unit and would be providing a signal enabling RTÉ to show the game.
A hasty securing of a studio facility and shuffling of the daytime schedule took place within hours and the game will now be shown live at 1 pm tomorrow, Tuesday, 12th November.
We are not yet at a stage with the Women’s game that such coverage is negotiated and agreed in advance cycles and this took a substantial amount of work across the European Broadcasting Union, UEFA, the Greek FA, the FAI and on the part of RTÉ Deputy Head of Sport Cliona O’Leary.
It has worked and now we will be able to see the next step in the team’s progress towards a potential first Major Championships in England in 2021.
The team has gotten off to a strong start in qualification with wins over Montenegro and Ukraine, the latter in front of a record crowd at Tallaght Stadium. Greece are fresh off a 4-0 win over Montenegro though and will present a challenge.
Northern Ireland are at home to Wales tomorrow night, looking to bounce back from defeat to Norway on Friday, also in front of a record crowd for the home side.
Cliona O’Leary from RTÉ will be live with us at the Sport for Business Women in Sport Conference at RTÉ on Wednesday, alongside a host of stars from on and off the field of play in Women’s Sport.
Anne Smyth from Electric Ireland, sponsors of Women’s football in Northern Ireland will be joining us Live at the Sport for Business Belfast Breakfast in partnership with Ulster University on Friday, November 29th.
