The FAI has strengthened its leadership team with the appointment of John Martin as Director of Football, a role that will sit at the heart of strategy, development, and alignment across the game.
In what has been a tough week for the game, one in which Senior men’s manager Heimir Hallgrimsson said he was “struggling to see the light,” but with more than a single campaign to be considered and the hosting of Euro 2028 Finals coming onto the horizon, the Association has to keep on moving forward.
Martin brings a blend of on-the-pitch experience and boardroom expertise. A former League of Ireland player with UCD, Longford Town and Shamrock Rovers, he transitioned into a successful career in financial services before stepping into football leadership as CEO of Shamrock Rovers in 2023.
One of his last engagements was on stage with Sport for Business at our League of Ireland breakfast, held in partnership with Grant Thornton, in June of this year. He spoke impressively, and the sport is well served by having him step into such a central position.
Football runs deep in the Martin family. His father, Paul, and brother, Robbie, both played in the League of Ireland, while John himself has built his coaching credentials with spells as Assistant Manager at Shelbourne and Longford Town. He also holds a UEFA A Licence, underlining his football pedigree.
As Director of Football, Martin will work closely with the Men’s and Women’s Head Coaches and the leads for Women & Girls’ Football, Competitions, Coach Education, Refereeing, and Football Strategic Projects.
He will sit on the FAI Senior Leadership Team and lead the Football Leadership Team, with a particular focus on aligning the development of the women’s game, deepening engagement with stakeholders, and delivering key strategic initiatives.
“I’m excited to take up the role and responsibilities of Director of Football in what is a really important period for the development and future of Irish football.”
There is fantastic work being done all around the country. However, there is still much more that we can do to support players, coaches, match officials, clubs, leagues, administrators, and volunteers in becoming even better and continuing to raise standards.”
“I’m looking forward to working with people from all levels of the game to help make Irish football stronger and ensure that we are catering for everyone involved in our game.”
Alongside Martin’s appointment, the FAI confirmed that Shane Robinson has been named Technical Director after serving in the role on an interim basis. Robinson will continue to lead on youth international teams, player development, talent identification and performance support, preparing the next generation for senior international football.
FAI CEO David Courell welcomed both appointments, describing Martin as “the stand-out candidate” and highlighting his mix of skills and experience.
“John offers a great blend of skills and experience that will be key to aligning the football community and driving our long-term vision in the Football Pathways Plan going forward. I’d also like to congratulate Shane Robinson on being confirmed as Technical Director and I am confident that with John and Shane, we have the right people in place to help us fulfil the full potential of Irish Football.”
