Kennedy was elected as Vice Chair three years ago and will now serve that same length of time as Chair of the full County Board.
She is the second woman to take up similar high elected office within the GAA, following on from Roisin Jordan of Tyrone.
In her speech accepting the position last night, she paid tribute to Jordan and to Liz Howard who had previously become the first woman elected to a County Board in Tipperary.
The dealing with an overrun on costs of the redeveloped Pairc Uí Caoimh stadium will be one of the key elements of her tenure but at least on the pitch, there is a raised level of expectation from Cork senior teams in the men’s game after better than expected Championship performances last year.
Kennedy spoke last night of building stronger links with Camogie and Ladies Football both of which Cork teams have dominated their respective sports over recent years, and of the possibility of their playing matches in Cork’s Headquarter stadium which has not previously been the case.
Kennedy has made history by getting to this position, the next step will be to prove that she can lead the county back to the summit of sport from which it has been absent for too long.
