Irish sailor Eve McMahon has retained her U21 World Championship title in Viana Do Costello in Portugal.

A clear winner with a race to spare, McMahon took the championship 30 points ahead of her closest competitors – Evie Saunders of Australia and Ginevra Caracciolo Di Brienza of Italy.

She had a very strong week, making it hard for her competitors to come close. She maintained low scores throughout the competition, finishing five of her races with first positions. The racing was tough, with varying winds and strong tides for the competitors to sail against all week.

“Eve was consistently strong each day and performed to a good standard in varying aspects of her racing,” said her coach, Rory Fitzpatrick.

“This will be a strong takeaway for her as Paris 2024 now closes in.”

This victory comes just eight months after she last won the U21 World Championships in Tangier, Morocco.

Eve, a native of Howth, will begin her Olympic campaign on August 1st in Marseille, sailing in the ILCA 6 class.  She is one of the five sailors across three boats that will represent Ireland at the Games.
