The Irish Sport and Exercise Association is hosting a webinar next week looking at the mental wellbeing of high performance coaches and how that can be minded.
It is of particular importance at a time like this when they will be under the greatest pressure leading up to the Olympic and Paralympic Games, as well as, in a local context, the All Ireland Series’ in Gaelic Games.
The webinar is free to register for and is one of a series that the fledgling representative body is hosting.
Previous events have included Professor Niall Moyna on Healthy Living in a Changing World and Aidan O’Connell of Cork GAAV on the Evolution of Sports Science in Team Sports.
This one will be hosted by Josh Frost, a PhD researcher at The University of Melbourne in Australia.
His research is also affiliated with the Elite Sports and Mental Health Team at Orygen, a not-for-profit Youth Mental Health Centre situated in Melbourne. The team conduct research with athletes, coaches and high-performance support staff, to find ways to better support the mental health of individuals operating within elite sports environments.
While empirical research has largely focused on understanding the mental health of elite athletes, Josh’s research seeks to explore and draw attention to the unique demands that high-performance coaches face. His research aims to identify strategies and interventions that can be employed to protect and preserve the mental health of the elite coaching community.
In addition to this, his research also extends to members of the elite sports entourage, to gain insights into the mental health experiences and challenges encountered by the high-performance support staff. In this webinar Josh will discuss his research on supporting the mental health of high-performance coaches and support staff.
