Munster Rugby has revealed the findings of an independent Economic Impact Assessment undertaken by Repucon Consulting, related to last November’s Munster v All Blacks XV fixture.
The match was held at Thomond Park in front of a sell-out 26,267 attendance, and the figures show a breakdown of the number of supporters who travelled and how much they delivered for the local economy.
This was the first time a touring All Blacks side had played in Munster since 2016.
The game was presented in association with Pinergy, Munster Rugby’s official energy partner.
Munster Rugby distributed an online economic impact survey to ticket holders immediately after the game, receiving 1,509 replies.
Among the findings were:
- 83.3% of ticket sales were within Munster, with Limerick accounting for 30% and Cork 28.7%. Leinster-based supporters accounted for 12.2%, while overseas supports accounted for 1.3% of ticket sales;
- The total direct expenditure generated by all attendees was €2.8 million;
- The total direct expenditure generated by visitors to Limerick was €2.2 million;
- The total economic impact of the game was €3.6 million;
- The number of accommodation bed nights generated for Limerick was 2,891;
- 18,376 people attended the match from outside Limerick City and County;
- The average overnight spectator spend per night was €240 and the average spend by day-trippers to the game was €70.
This report follows one released a year ago on the impact of Munster’s fixture against Crusaders at SuperValu Pairc Uí Chaoimh in February last year.
The attendance for that game was 40,855 and with a very similar breakdown between Munster residents, ones from Leinster and ones from overseas.
